‘Nomicon and Vittles!

By Monica on November 13th, 2007

Since everyone is on the chickpea cutlet bandwagon, I thought I’d be sassy and try out the Hot Sauce Glazed Tempeh from Veganomicon.  This is the first thing I tried from ‘Nomicon and I probably need not mention that it was damn good.  I took Isa’s advice and served it with mashed taters and her jaleneno corn gravy.

I’ve also fallen in love with Vegan Vittles.  The recipe for gyros is what made me buy the book as gyros are one taste I genuinely miss.  I was not disappointed; these are easily the best vegan gyros I’ve ever had.  Right up there on the ‘fool the omni scale’. Typically I get gyros from the Chicago Diner every time we visit, but I am now freed up to try something else there.  You need to make them.  Now.

And last but not least, Chuckwagon Stew from Vittles.  Paired with last week’s squash rolls, of course.  You can’t beat a good no-beef stew on a cold night, and this is a good one!

Sorry for the short post, but this has been one crappy week and it’s only Tuesday.  We have a kitty going through hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) and he’s on support at the vet’s.  Tomorrow we find out if his numbers are improving or if his liver is still failing, in which case we’d have to say goodbye.  So hard to come home from the vet’s with an empty carrier or leash.  This is the snarkiest, most stubborn cat I’ve ever known, so I am hoping he is fighting with everything he’s got.  If anyone else has been through this disease, please gimme a holler with any thoughts.  I’ll be at home drinking heavily!

I’m sorry to hear about the kitty, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you. I never had a pet go through that particular disease, but I did have a dog that passed away from heart disease. It was tough, but I know she hung on for us a lot longer than she should have.

    Good luck with everything.

Sorry to hear about your kitty. My husband’s sweet cat had similar problems when he was little and had to be hand-fed a liquid diet. Now he’s being finicky again and we’re keeping an eye on him. All my thoughts are with you and your kitty as you’re going through this. Thanks for the beautiful photos and awesome recipes!

Thank you all for the kind thoughts. With enough anti-nausea drugs, Sampson was able to keep his dinner down last night. He is attempting to use his litter box and is greeting the doctor when she comes to tend to him each time, which are both good signs. Will know more tonight. Thanks again, friends.

I have yet to purchase Veganomicon. I saw a young boy joyfully carrying around a copy the other day at Amitbul. It warmed my heart :)

Those gyros look so phenominal. I wish that I had that cook book! I am going to be on the hunt now!!!

Sorry about your cat! Hope he gets well soon.

I leafed through Veganomicon at the bookstore the other day and it’s definitely on my wishlist. Now I wish I had tried the gyros at Chicago Diner…I’ve only been there twice but maybe I should try to swing a visit there.

Oh and I’m so sorry about your kitty :-( I know how special (and snarky!) theu can be.

Sampson is still at the vet’s with an additional diagnosis of acute hepatitis. One of his many meds is Zofran, the 20th most expensive human drug in the world right now, which prevents nausea. With that he kept food down yesterday, but threw up this morning when they tried oral Zofran instead of IV. Liver values were improving but he must keep food down for the liver to regenerate. So no progress today, but he’s also still alive!

oh, poor kitty. I’m sending all my good energy your way,and I hope everything works out for the best. I’ve not heard of this disease, but one of our cats has diabetes and it is a roller coaster ride. Sigh.
